Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a screening tool. It does not separate muscle from fat, so athletes may score high, and it can miss excess body fat in people with low muscle mass. Use it alongside waist size and a doctor’s advice.

How many calories should I eat to lose weight?

A common starting point is about 500 kcal below your maintenance calories (TDEE), which tends to lead to roughly 0.5 kg (1 lb) of loss per week. Do not go below 1,200 kcal (women) or 1,500 kcal (men) without medical supervision. For a more detailed estimate with goal-based calorie targets, use our TDEE calculator.

Do I need 8 glasses of water a day?

That is a rule of thumb, not a requirement. Needs depend on body weight, activity, climate and diet. The calculator gives a personalized estimate. Food and other drinks also contribute.

These calculators give general estimates for adults and are not medical advice. Talk to a qualified healthcare professional before making changes to your diet or exercise. Not suitable for children, pregnancy or medical conditions affecting weight or fluids. For more trusted health resources, see the World Health Organization’s health tools.
